Galway City Council will host a Mayoral reception to launch Africia Day 2014 for Galway City. The Mayoral Reception will include inputs from the Galway African Film Festival and the Brothers of Charity Art Project.
Galway City Partnership aim to deliver 2 educational school based initiatives for Africa Day
(1) Intergenerational Africa-Ireland Secondary School Project which involves two intergenerational sessions at two schools in Galway City Centre.
(2) After Schools – Primary School Intercultural Project propose to run a series of events during the two weeks running up to Africa Day with children & parents of the After Schools Project. The events will be located in the Ballybane Community Resource Centre and they will run workshops in different types of African dance & music and also workshops in costume making/African dress.
The ARD Family Resource Centre will run an Africa Day event at Doughiska, showcasing art, dance, music, poetry and food from a range of African countries. Africa Day Doughiska aims to celebrate the rich diversity of African culture in the Doughiska area on the East side of Galway city, where approximately 20% of the Doughiska Roscam and Ardaun population are of African descent according to the last Census.
